Hello!

Welcome to my portfolio website. I am Riikka Ruotsalainen, a Finnish designer (BCA, MBA) and visual artist (MCA) working in Helsinki. Creating different types of visual content is my passion.

Some of my photographs are available in limited editions, printed on metal, mainly in sizes 25 × 25 cm, 30 × 30 cm. The photographs are ready to hang and signed on the back.

About Photography 

When working on my photographs, I often combine multiple layers—photography, painting, text and typography. I may remove elements from the original image and add new ones. I'm drawn to the tension between the organic and the inorganic, to contrasts, moods, and quiet unease. I edit my photographs in Photoshop, blending what is real with the imaginary. I often consider my photos as wish images.

Alongside photography, I work with graphic design and layout. I'm interested in the intersection of usability and visual expression, combining creative solutions with systematic ways of presenting information. I take on graphic design projects on commission.

About Painting

My painting process is intuitive. It often begins with an abstract feeling or image that I try to bring into concrete form. Colors, emotions, and shifting moods guide the work.
